The faults we fix
- Snapped torsion or extension springs. The loud bang, then a door that lifts like dead weight. The most common repair in the book, and the one to leave alone until we get there. Here is why.
- Doors off their tracks. A roller pops, a panel racks, the door jams part-open. Stop using it; forcing it is what bends things beyond a straightforward fix.
- Frayed or snapped lift cables, and the drums they wind onto.
- Openers that are dead or erratic: motors, travel limits, remotes and the safety beams that stop a door closing when they are dirty, knocked or failed.
- Worn rollers, hinges and bearings, the graunching noise a door makes for months before something actually lets go.
- Perished seals and storm-damaged panels, on house doors and shed doors alike.
The car is trapped inside? Most openers have a red manual release cord hanging from the rail. With the door DOWN, pulling it disconnects the trolley so the door can be lifted by hand, provided the springs are intact. If the spring has just gone bang, the door will be dead weight: do not fight it, and do not unbolt anything from the spring hardware.
